Yorkshire-based company Grow Aid has developed, manufactures and sells the slug-repellant Slug Gone, which is environmentally-friendly and has other benefits for gardeners. Its founder Brian Gillard explains the reason for Slug Gone’s effectiveness, “Wool fibres have fine scales with tiny barbs, causing them to felt and mat together. Sand and grit already in the compound, potassium salts from sheep and thousands of tiny hairs combine to absorb slime from the slug, creating irritation and encouraging it to seek food elsewhere. Slug Gone is a physical barrier and not a killer. It is also totally safe to humans, pets and wildlife, and is both easy and pleasant to use.”
Slug Gone also acts as an excellent slow-release fertiliser, being a rich, organic source of nitrogen and potash. Due to the water-attracting nature of wool, Slug Gone has a water absorbency of up to 200 per cent, making it an excellent mulch in addition to becoming a weed suppressant. The wool fibres gradually break down over a long period and can be dug in as a valuable soil improver. Slug Gone can even be used in hanging baskets and other containers, significantly reducing the watering frequency.
