Poultry will be even higher up the pecking order at The Edible Garden Show next year as Britain is witnessing the biggest revival in hen-keeping since the Second World War with 700,000 people flocking to keep chickens to beat the recession. The British Hen Welfare Trust has reported an 80 per cent growth in people keeping poultry over the past three years. In the meantime chicken coop suppliers have seen sales rocket as more people go that ‘egg-stra’ mile to becoming more self-sufficient. Exhibitors rush to sign up for the show in 2012

Just five months after the successful launch of The Edible Garden Show, the first-ever national event dedicated to grow-your-own fruit and vegetables, organisers are on course to deliver their promise that the 2012 exhibition will be bigger and even better! Almost the same number of exhibitors which attended the launch event in March have signed up for 2012 while The Edible Garden Show sales team is talking to numerous other exhibitors poised to join the three-day gardening extravaganza. This year’s event attracted nearly 11,000 visitors to Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, packing out the exhibition hall with many trade stands needing to replenish stocks to keep pace with the demand for products. One in four now ‘grow their own’ fruit and veg

Consumer watchdog Which? has confirmed what The Edible Garden Show organisers have known for a long time – more people are joining the grow-your-own revolution to save money and lead healthier lives. A Which? report has revealed one in four people now grow edible crops to cope with rocketing food and fuel prices. Researchers also found consumers were turning to home-grown produce so they could eat healthily. In the consumer magazine’s online survey of over 1,000 people, 59 per cent said they had turned to growing their own because “increases in food prices mean I’m trying to be more economical”.
